Vampires - Strigoi / Moroi
Ok, the word for vampire in Romanian is strigoi and strigoii mean “the vampires”.
This is a special word because strigoi mean vampire and strigoi mean vampires and strigoii mean the vampires. Usually we have words like drac for devil and draci for devils and dracii for the devils, as you see at strigoi we have an “i” to both singular and plural (vampire vampires) and two “i” at “the vampires”.
Western vampires, who get out in the night from their coffins to suck the blood of victims, transforimg them into vampires, are a little different but the same with strigoi / moroi from Romania.
Strigoii, alive or dead, are the souls of people who can’t find rest.
Alive strigoi are formed formed from babies born with tails or those born with “camasa” or “tichie” (rests of the embryonic membrane) or those born from an incest. Also can become a strigoi the third born nonlegitim (if a mother had sex with many mens and has 3 children who don’t know their fathers, the third can become strigoi) child. They tell that women born babies with “tichie” if in the time of pregnancy thy drink unholy water (the water used by a devil) or if they went out with their head open and the devil put a “tichie on their heads (tichie also mean hat, you wear a hat on your head). If “moasa” (the women assisting the birth) sees that “tichie” she will cut it so the baby will not eat it to become a strigoi.Alive strigoi are invisibles and can be seen only by those borned in a saturday or those who on the eve of Sangiorz day cut the head of a white snake with a golden coin, put in the snake’s mouth garlic and berried under the house.In the day time, alive strigoi can be recognized if they don’t eat garlic or union and they will not approach tamaie (a thing that is burning and give smoke, used in church like holy water)Strigoii vii (the souls) leave the body in the night (which remain as dead) and they make bad things: steal the milk of cows, steal the virility of men, influence the rainThere are 2 nights most important for these event: the Sangiorz eve (22-23 april) and the night of Saint Andrew (29-30 November).
In Saint George eve (or Sangiorz), strigoii but especially strigoi females, steal the milk, strength of men…In Saint Andrew night, after leaving the body, strigoi makes 3 jumps turning over their heads(like gymnasts) and they transform in different animals, and at a rascruce (when a road meets with another road, sorry for my English again) they meet and FIGHT the dead strigoi to decide who will be the leader for next year.
Dead strigoi are souls that can’t go to the the world for different reasons.Their bodies doesn’t decompose and they come back (after 9 days, or 6 weeks, or six months, or six years) especially in the nights with fool moon.
After death, if a man was an alive strigoi, will become a dead strigoi if some rituals will not be performed. So, that is why the mother of a dead strigoi (if she knows) will warn them about this matter.If people know about someone that it was an alive strigoi, after they die they will put in the strigoi heart a stake.
Dead strigoi are also those who sell their souls to the devil or babies killed by their mothers after they are born.
Most of the bad things are made by the female strigoi but how ever people think that a vrajitoare (witch) does more bad things than the strigoi.
